Prayer from Project Paul

Prayer, composed in 2003, was originally commissioned by Baritone Scott Hawley for his senior recital at Lawrence University. I then included it as the final scene in Project Paul, the multimedia show I co-wrote in 2005 about the Apostle Paul. The text is directly from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians and was not changed at all. It’s beautiful writing by Paul–passionate and expansive–that comes back to me often in my life, feeling new each time as the demands of life change.

Text: Ephesians 3:16-19
16I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Instrumental TrackThe instrumental track was made on my old Kurzweil PC-88 using the “Clavichord” patch. By adding gobs of reverb to diminish the attack I could play with the sound and the overtones. This track was made just with the effects on the PC-88. Please download the instrumental track and the sheet music to use in a Confrontatie or perform it on your own.
